Christmas Eve

Jane lived in the countryside with her husband Peter and her two children. They had a big house in the middle of the woods. It was a special evening, Christmas Eve, and they were waiting for Peter, who worked in the city. Sometimes he arrived at home late because of the traffic. The children were looking forward to opening their presents and Jane was having dinner.
Suddenly she heard something strange, like a heavy blow outside the house. She went out and looked round but she didn’t see anything. It was a cold, dark night. “Peter is coming home soon”, she thought.
An hour later he hadn’t come back yet. She was worried so she phoned him. Nobody answered it.
At midnight, when the children were sleeping, she called the police. While she was waiting for them, she saw through the bedroom’s window a car behind the house. It was Peter’s car. Quickly she went out and looked into the car. Peter wasn’t there, but there were lots of presents.
When the police arrived, they looked all over the place and everywhere round the house. They didn’t get anything, there was only a long ladder on the ground. Jane said it was normally in the shed. Maybe somebody who was passing by took the ladder and put it there. In fact, they didn’t find anything important.
Peter didn’t appear, it was a big mystery.
Two years later, Jane decided to clean the chimney because it didn’t work well. So she hired a chimney sweep. When the chimney sweep was cleaning it, he found a dead body in it. It was hard to believe but it was Peter. He was wearing Father Christmas clothes. Jane could understand now what had happened that night.
